The writer, Horatio Spafford, wrote the hymn as he passed by the place in the ocean where his four young daughters had drowned when the ocean liner they were traveling on sank. He was traveling to meet his wife who was rescued and was in Great Britain. Right before this, they had also lost their son and experienced the Great Chicago Fire.
